Genetic counseling is essential for people facing diagnoses or risks of hereditary conditions. With the rapid development of genetics and genomics, the demand for specialists who can interpret and guide individuals through genetic test results has grown immensely. In response to this need, the University of Medical Sciences of Havana offers the Master’s Degree in Genetic Counseling, led by the National Center for Medical Genetics (CNGM), an institution with over 25 years of experience in Clinical Genetics programs and recognized as a WHO Collaborating Center since 1986.

The program aims to train professionals with a strong practical profile in areas such as general and human genetics, scientific research, and genetic counseling. This approach enables future "Genetic Counselors" to develop skills in clinical practice and research, preparing graduates to identify family genetic risks, provide psychological support, offer reproductive options, and ensure appropriate medical follow-up. Furthermore, the program promotes the prevention of genetic diseases and congenital defects from a community-based perspective.

With a duration of one year, this master’s program combines a solid theoretical framework with hands-on training in genetic consultations and research projects, making it an accessible and comprehensive option for those seeking to specialize in this emerging field.
