September 21, World Alzheimer’s Day – Each September, World Alzheimer’s Month invites us to reflect on the importance of awareness and action in the face of dementia. In 2025, the global campaign promotes the theme “Know dementia, know Alzheimer’s”, reminding us that knowledge is the key to breaking myths and addressing the challenges of this condition.
Today, more than 55 million people worldwide live with dementia, and its impact extends not only to those affected but also to their families, communities, and health systems. Yet, misconceptions persist: 80% of the public and 65% of health professionals still believe that dementia is a normal part of aging. The reality is very different: it is a syndrome that affects memory, thinking, and daily life, and whose care requires specialized training.
Specialized Training for a Global Challenge
In this context, Cuba offers a unique program: the Master’s Degree in Dementia Syndromes, developed at the Alzheimer’s Studies Center of the Finlay Albarrán Faculty of Medicine, in Havana. This academic program is part of the strategy of Servicios Médicos Cubanos to promote the training of health professionals in an area of growing global relevance.
The program is designed for those who wish to contribute to improving the care of people with dementia through an integral, scientific, and practical approach.
Key Features of the Master’s Program
Comprehensive and multidisciplinary curriculum: 11 compulsory modules, 3 thesis workshops, 4 optional courses, and a final dissertation covering neuropsychology, research, statistics, mental health, and behavioral aspects of dementia.
Practical experience in the national health system: rotations that allow students to apply knowledge in real-world scenarios.
Blended learning format: students attend in person only 3 months per year, including the thesis and final defense period.
International reference center: the Alzheimer’s Studies Center has more than two decades of experience in diagnosis, research, and training, with an emphasis on primary health care.
An Opportunity to Make a Difference
The Master’s Degree in Dementia Syndromes is aimed at health professionals committed to transforming the lives of patients and their families.
