Plastic Surgery and Burn Care is the medical specialty focused on restoring the functional and anatomical normality of the body’s coverage according to established aesthetic patterns, as well as on the diagnosis, treatment, and comprehensive rehabilitation of burn patients and their sequelae.

It is one of the oldest specialties in medicine. However, its scientific and technological development has made it one of the most dynamic and advanced surgical fields in contemporary practice. Its scope requires technical precision, clinical judgment, anatomical mastery, and a deep understanding of the physical and psychological impact of complex injuries and burns.

Training in this specialty implies assuming the responsibility of restoring function, structure, and quality of life, integrating science, ethics, and human sensitivity.

Studying Plastic Surgery and Burn Care in Cuba

Cuba offers the opportunity to pursue this specialty at a postgraduate level through a surgical training program with a comprehensive approach, structured to ensure the progressive development of professional competencies.

The program adopts a modular system lasting four years, which facilitates multidisciplinary learning integration. Its structure is organized into three areas directly related to the specialty’s work objectives, derived from the guiding function of the system: medical care.

In total, 44 modules have been defined:

40 modules directly linked to medical care functions.

4 modules corresponding to administration, research, and teaching functions.

Each module constitutes an integrating unit that allows achieving, in flexible timeframes, the educational objectives related to clinical skills, surgical techniques, professional attitudes, research competencies, and teaching abilities.

This design ensures that residents not only acquire technical mastery in reconstructive procedures and comprehensive burn patient management but also gain tools for service management, scientific research, and the training of new professionals.

Evaluation and Certification

At the end of the four-year program, residents must pass a state exam certifying their competence to practice as a Specialist in Plastic Surgery and Burn Care.
