Dato Key data
  • Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a threat to global health and development. It requires urgent multisectoral action in order to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
  • WHO has declared antimicrobial resistance as one of the top 10 public health threats facing humanity.
  • The misuse and overuse of antimicrobials is the main factor driving the emergence of drug-resistant pathogens.
  • The cost of AMR to the economy is considerable. In addition to death and disability, extended illness results in longer hospital stays, the need for more expensive drugs, and financial difficulties for those affected.
  • Without effective antimicrobials, the outcomes of modern medicine in the treatment of infections, especially during major surgery and cancer chemotherapy, would be compromised to a greater degree.

During November 18-24, World Week for Antimicrobial Use Awareness 2022 (WAAW) is being held to raise awareness of the health and health risks associated with the excessive or inappropriate use of this group of drugs.

Este año, el lema es: This year, the message is: "Let's prevent antimicrobial resistance together".

Antimicrobial resistance jeopardizes the effectiveness of prevention and treatment of a growing number of infections caused by viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites.

AMR occurs when microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, viruses and parasites) undergo changes when exposed to antimicrobials (e.g. antibiotics, antifungals, antivirals, antimalarials or anthelmintics). Microorganisms resistant to most antimicrobials are known as ultra-resistant.

As a result, the drugs become ineffective and infections persist in the body, increasing the risk of spread to others.

Antimicrobial resistance poses a growing threat to global public health and requires action by all sectors of government and society. The fight against AMR is a truly global effort and must be confronted with a "One Health" approach.

To curb it effectively, all sectors must join forces to promote cautious use of antimicrobials as well as preventive measures. Strengthening infection prevention and control in hospital facilities, farms and food industry facilities, ensuring access to vaccines, safe water, sanitation and hygiene, implementing best practices in food and agricultural production, and ensuring good waste and wastewater management in relevant industries are key to reducing the need for antimicrobials and minimizing the emergence and transmission of antimicrobial resistance.
