October 1st, International Day of Older Persons — On this special date, Cuba highlights its commitment to the well-being of the elderly through specialized academic training in Gerontology and Geriatrics, two key disciplines in the comprehensive care of an aging population.

Population aging is a global reality, and Latin America is no exception. In response to this challenge, Cuba positions itself as a regional leader with advanced study programs to train competent professionals in both clinical and multidimensional perspectives, covering psychological, social, and educational aspects of elderly care.

What are Gerontology and Geriatrics?

Gerontology is the science that studies aging in its multiple dimensions: scientific, social, psychological, demographic, political, economic, and educational. Geriatrics, on the other hand, focuses on the clinical, preventive, and therapeutic aspects aimed at treating diseases in the elderly. Both are essential to ensuring quality care for the aging population, and Cuba's academic program combines these two disciplines to provide comprehensive and up-to-date training.

Excellence in the Academic Program

Cuba has designed a Gerontology and Geriatrics program with 18 specialized modules, structured to address the needs and challenges in elderly care. These modules are divided into four main areas:

Medical Care: 14 modules providing training in diagnosing, treating, and preventing prevalent diseases in geriatrics.
Administration: Training in the management and coordination of programs and services related to the elderly.
Research: Training in methodologies for developing new approaches applicable to elderly care.
Teaching: Preparation for instructing future professionals in this field.

This multidisciplinary approach aims to equip professionals to address aging in a comprehensive manner, not only treating diseases but also promoting healthy and active aging.

Why Study in Cuba?

In addition to a long tradition and extensive experience in medicine and public health, the country is known for the equity of its medical services. Cuba also stands out for its focus on primary health care and disease prevention. Professionals who choose to train in Gerontology and Geriatrics in Cuba will not only receive high-level academic training but will also have the opportunity to apply their knowledge in an internationally recognized healthcare system.
