Every March 12, World Glaucoma Day is commemorated to raise awareness of this progressive, degenerative eye disease that affects the optic nerve and can lead to blindness. Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the world and it is estimated that about 80 million people suffer from it.

Glaucoma is an insidious disease, as approximately 50% of those affected are unaware that they have it, which can be even more alarming in underdeveloped countries where lack of access to medical care makes early diagnosis difficult. In the early stages, it is asymptomatic, meaning that patients do not experience obvious symptoms until the disease is in an advanced stage.

There are several risk factors associated with glaucoma, including family history, diabetes, smoking, nearsightedness and farsightedness, prolonged corticosteroid use and sun exposure. While it can affect people of all ages, aging is one of the most important factors.

Early diagnosis of glaucoma is crucial to prevent significant vision loss. People who have risk factors should have regular eye examinations that include eye pressure measurements. If glaucoma is detected in its early stages, it is possible to slow or prevent vision loss. It is important to note that those who are diagnosed with this condition will likely need lifelong treatment.

Treatment may include medication, surgery or laser therapy, depending on the severity and progression of the disease. In many cases, eye drops and medications are used to reduce intraocular pressure.

In Cuba, glaucoma surgical treatment is one of the ophthalmological services offered, backed by more than 50 years of experience and a high level of specialization. If you wish to access this service, you can contact the Coordination and Processing Center of Comercializadora de Servicios Médicos Cubanos, S.A. by e-mail at smc@smcsalud.cu.

On World Glaucoma Day, let us remember the importance of early detection and proper treatment to preserve our vision. Let's not underestimate regular eye exams and consult our doctors if we experience vision changes or have risk factors. Together we can fight glaucoma and protect our visual health.
