Plastic Surgery is the medical specialty whose purpose is to restore the functional and anatomical normality of body coverage according to specific aesthetic standards, as well as the diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of burn patients and their sequelae. It is one of the oldest existing specialties, though it took many centuries before becoming one of the most dynamic and advanced specialties of contemporary medicine.
The program content follows the modular system. Its structure was defined in three areas directly related to its field of work and study, derived from the leading function of the system: medical care.
Based on each of its functions, 44 modules were defined. Of these, 40 correspond to the medical care function, while the remaining 4 correspond to the other functions: administration, research, and teaching. Each module, as an integrative and multidisciplinary structure of learning activities, allows the educational objectives of competencies, skills, and attitudes required for the professional performance of residents to be achieved within a flexible timeframe.
At the end of the designated years of training, a state examination is administered to certify that the graduate is qualified to practice as a specialist in Plastic Surgery and Burn Care.
