The specialty is designed under guidelines that give it a broad profile, allowing the specialist to develop their professional work in large human groups such as the community and the group of families that comprise it, as well as in other population groups in educational institutions and work centers.
This specialist has five basic functions defined: Comprehensive Medical Care, Teaching-Educational, Administration, Research, and Special, all of them connected in a system by the structure of ethical-humanistic training, the guiding function being Comprehensive Medical Care.
The content of the program is structured under the system of courses, concretized in seven areas related to the object of work and study, derived from the guiding function of the system of comprehensive medical care. General and per-year objectives were defined, in addition to competencies and skills. Each area is divided into courses, and in turn, each one is fragmented into thematic units. The course is conceptualized as the multidisciplinary didactic structure.
The study plan structures its contents to be developed in the family doctor and nurse's office, in the polyclinic, as well as in the base hospitals, with a full-time dedication in the workplace as a family doctor, linking the work component of medical care, teaching, research, and administration.
