Founded in 1966 as an advanced scientific-medical institution in the specialty, it bears the name of its founder and precursor of Nephrology specialties in Cuba.

The Institute is the leading center for the Nephrology specialty and the national programs for Kidney Transplantation, Hemodialysis, Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis, and Chronic Kidney Disease Prevention.

Its mission is to implement and develop the most advanced technologies and methodologies necessary to maintain the Institute of Nephrology as a Center of Excellence in terms of health, building for this purpose a collaborative environment in which all workers, patients, and family members actively participate, achieving a synergistic integration that stimulates and enhances quality in basic research, prevention, and medical care of Chronic Kidney Disease.
