The National Center for Medical Genetics (CNGM) of the University of Medical Sciences of Havana, Cuba, has more than 25 years of experience in coordinating and implementing a community-based program in the provision of Clinical Genetics services. It has been approved as a WHO Collaborating Center for the Development of Genetic Approaches in Health Promotion since 1986.
To guarantee the coverage of genetic services to the entire population from the primary health level, the Master's Degree in Genetic Counseling was conceived, with a performance-based profile. Its program is composed of the Theoretical-Methodological Training of four Areas (I Basic principles of general genetics, II Basic principles of Human Genetics, III Research Methodology, IV Genetic Counseling), practical development through training in genetic consultations, and research work.
The graduates, generally called "Genetic Counselors," due to their command of theoretical-practical, psychological, and ethical elements of Genetic Counseling, will be able to identify families with genetic risk, inheritance patterns, and probability of recurrence of the disorder in question. They will provide families with psychological support, offer reproductive options, treatments, medical follow-up, and influence the community, carrying out the prevention of genetic diseases and congenital defects from the community level. Likewise, graduates will have the necessary tools to research in the field of genetics and genomics and teach at different levels on the aforementioned topics.
Duration: one year
