The Master's Degree in Cytopathology is aimed at promoting the continuing education and scientific updating of university graduates in the specialty of Anatomic Pathology and Health Technology with related specialties, in order to provide them with a broad scientific culture and advanced knowledge. Its fundamental aspiration is to train a professional capable of facing current demands, carrying out scientific research that provides innovative solutions to the problems of social practice, allowing for the necessary transformations based on contemporary economic, cultural, political-ideological, and educational realities in the corresponding areas of action.

The quantitative increase in the specialty of Anatomic Pathology has demanded and allowed specific branches of this discipline to begin and develop according to the performance that each medical or surgical specialty achieves in its work. The practice is based on four fundamental methods: biopsy, autopsy, Cytopathology, and experimental studies. Surgical pathology is the discipline that deals with the Anatomic Pathology of tissues removed from living patients. This definition is also extended to cytopathological studies.

In recent decades, the growing and accelerated development of genetics, immunology, molecular biochemistry, and computer science applied to the development of communications and the processing of morphological images has led to a significant revolution in the knowledge of Pathology and, therefore, in the understanding of different pathological processes. The increase in scientific knowledge and technological development necessarily implies an increase in professional responsibility, to ensure that they are in function of social benefit and medical scientific research.
