In recent years, Medical Genetics has undergone a rapid advance in the knowledge that nurtures genomic medicine, impacting the diagnosis, prevention, and personalization of treatments for genetic conditions that require it. Therefore, it is absolutely necessary for health professionals to acquire concepts and knowledge related to the development of Medical Genetics.
With this purpose, the Master’s Program in Medical Genetics was created, coordinated by the National Center of Medical Genetics (CNGM) of the University of Medical Sciences of Havana, Cuba, with over 25 years of experience in coordinating and delivering postgraduate activities in the field of Clinical Genetics. Since 1986, the center has been a WHO Collaborating Center for the Development of Genetic Approaches to Health Promotion.
This master’s program is aimed at professionals not previously trained in this field. Upon completion, they will be able to carry out research, appropriately discuss and interpret scientific results of this nature, design and deliver both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching activities on related subjects, as well as apply this knowledge in their performance across different areas of medical sciences. The academic setting is the National Center of Medical Genetics, under a blended learning modality. The program is organized into 14 compulsory courses and 4 electives, providing extensive updates that interrelate genetic diseases and congenital defects with other medical specialties, as well as research methodology and genetic epidemiology tools. It also lays the foundations for designing impactful research in the field of genomics.
