Liver diseases represent a major cause of morbidity in the global population.

The rapid development that has taken place in the understanding of liver diseases—covering clinical, epidemiological, and diagnostic aspects, including biochemical, imaging, and histopathological methods, along with contributions from immunology, biology, and molecular genetics—has led to hepatology becoming a recognized medical specialty. For this reason, this master’s program was created so that specialists in Gastroenterology, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, and other related fields may acquire the necessary knowledge to care for patients with liver diseases, as well as the ability to design and carry out research addressing the main problems associated with hepatic pathologies. The promotion of health actions for prevention is also an objective of the program.

The curriculum is structured into 13 compulsory courses and 3 electives. The compulsory courses cover: research methodology, philosophy and society, diagnostic methods in liver diseases, viral hepatitis, cholestatic and autoimmune liver diseases, metabolic liver diseases, systemic diseases with hepatic involvement, hepatotoxicity, liver cirrhosis and its complications, hepatic tumors and cysts, vascular liver diseases, liver and pregnancy, pediatric liver diseases, and liver transplantation.

Each course includes formative evaluation (control questions, group discussions, etc.). Final evaluation is carried out through the discussion of a real or simulated health case. Finally, each student must present and defend a master’s thesis.
