Autoimmune liver diseases include three well-defined entities in terms of diagnosis, prognosis and treatment: Autoimmune Hepatitis (AIH), Primary Biliary Cirrhosis (PBC) and Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC); and others not so well established such as Overlap Syndrome.

According to their natural history, when these diseases are not controlled, they invariably evolve to liver cirrhosis (LC). At this stage, the only effective treatment is liver transplantation.
