In the framework of the International Epilepsy Day, which is commemorated on the second Monday of February, we highlight the innovative treatment approach for patients affected by refractory temporal lobe epilepsy, offered by the Cuban Medical Services.

Epilepsy is a chronic, non-communicable brain disease characterized by recurrent seizures. Some 50 million people suffer from epilepsy, making it one of the most common neurological disorders.

It is estimated that 70% of people with epilepsy could live seizure-free if properly diagnosed and treated. Refractory epilepsy, characterized by persistent seizures despite therapy, is addressed in Cuba with a novel method called Neuro-Restorative Surgery of the Central Nervous System.

This treatment, based on minimal access surgical techniques, automated planning and neurophysiological verification, is carried out in three phases. The initial evaluation of epilepsy precedes the pre-surgical phase, which lasts seven days. Finally, the third phase covers the surgical treatment and the postoperative period.

Our services are distinguished by their multidisciplinary approach and more than 20 years of experience in the treatment of refractory epilepsy. With an International Neurological Restoration Center equipped with state-of-the-art technology, we have evaluated more than 400 patients, both children and adults, with results comparable to those reported in the international literature.

To access this innovative treatment, those interested should contact the Coordination and Processing Center of Comercializadora de Servicios Médicos Cubanos, S.A. via e-mail at smc@smcsalud.cu.

On a day dedicated to raising awareness about epilepsy, Cuba's treatment offer is presented as a light of hope for those who struggle with this neurological condition.
