Angiology and Vascular Surgery is defined as the medical-surgical specialty dedicated to the comprehensive, preventive, and curative care of the population affected by, or at risk of developing, the so-called peripheral circulatory diseases, both those related to impairment of blood supply pathways (arteriopathies) and those involving return pathways (phlebopathies and lymphopathies). Its current scope has become as universal as the circulatory function itself, also encompassing cerebrovascular insufficiency syndromes, abdominal angina, renovascular hypertension, and vasculogenic erectile dysfunction, caused by lesions of the precerebral, digestive, renal, and genital arteries, respectively—conditions that can be corrected through methods specific to this specialty. To this must be added the role played by macro- and microsurgical vascular techniques in organ transplantation.

The specialty program is structured over four academic years, during which the resident devotes all their time to teaching, clinical care, administrative, and research activities. Its organizational structure is modular, to be developed in different areas of care, designed according to the functions assigned in the professional profile and the various conditions the specialist must address, in line with the organization of the different levels of care.
